Mass Casualties Reported in Northern Gaza Amid Major Israeli Assault

Nearly 100 people, including children, were reportedly killed during a massive Israeli ground, air, and sea operation in northern Gaza early Friday, according to residents and Gaza’s civil defense authorities.
The assault, concentrated around the Beit Lahia region, marks one of the most extensive Israeli military operations in northern Gaza since the resumption of its offensive in March. Witnesses described heavy bombardment that flattened homes and tents sheltering displaced families. Armored vehicles were seen advancing toward the Al-Salateen neighborhood, surrounding a school where hundreds had taken refuge.
Israel’s military stated that the operation was aimed at dismantling what it called “terrorist infrastructure” and claimed several militants had been killed. Leaflets urging civilians to evacuate were dropped in advance, raising fears of a broader incursion into one of Gaza’s most densely populated areas.
The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen. A UN-supported analysis warns that all 2.1 million people in Gaza are at imminent risk of famine. While Israeli officials have blamed the humanitarian breakdown on Hamas interference with aid, international organizations report widespread starvation and lack of access to essentials like food and medical care due to ongoing blockades.
The conflict escalated after Hamas launched an attack into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages. In the months since, Gaza’s health ministry reports more than 53,000 fatalities, with the toll rising daily.
As of now, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with only 23 believed to still be alive.
