Tragedy in D.C.: 21-Year-Old Congressional Intern Killed in Drive-By Shooting

Washington, D.C. — Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old congressional intern and senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in the nation's capital on Monday night, July 1. The shooting occurred near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Northwest D.C., as Eric was walking in the area.
Authorities say multiple suspects opened fire from a moving vehicle, striking Tarpinian-Jachym, who police believe was not the intended target. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Two others, a woman and a 16-year-old boy, were also injured in the shooting and are expected to survive.
Tarpinian-Jachym had been serving as a summer intern for Congressman Ron Estes (R-KS) and had only recently begun his internship in Washington. Described by family, friends, and colleagues as a bright, kind-hearted young man with a passion for public service, Eric was pursuing a degree in finance with a minor in political science.
In a statement, Congressman Estes expressed deep sorrow, calling Eric “an incredible young man with a bright future.” Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal also offered condolences, remembering Eric as someone committed to making a difference.
The Metropolitan Police have recovered the vehicle believed to be used in the shooting and are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. So far, no suspects have been identified.
As the city grapples with ongoing gun violence, this tragic loss serves as a painful reminder of how senseless acts continue to devastate families and communities.
