U.S. Congressman Gerry Connolly Passes Away at 75

Fairfax, Virginia – U.S. Representative Gerald “Gerry” Connolly, a respected voice in American politics and a longtime advocate for public service and government accountability, passed away on May 21, 2025, at the age of 75, following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Representing Virginia’s 11th Congressional District since 2009, which includes much of Northern Virginia’s diverse and immigrant-rich communities, Connolly was known for his tireless work on behalf of federal employees, support for clean government, and sustainability, inclusion, and democratic principles.
Born in Boston in 1950, Connolly held a B.A. in literature and a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University. Before entering Congress, he served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and was chairman from 2003 to 2009. Under his leadership, the county made strides in public transportation, education, and green development.
In Congress, Connolly earned respect across the aisle for his deep knowledge of policy and advocacy for telework, fair federal pay, and government transparency. He consistently supported legislation that upheld civil rights, including for the LGBTQ+ community, and worked to protect the environment for future generations.
In April 2025, Connolly announced he would not seek re-election due to his declining health. He passed away peacefully at home in Fairfax, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Connolly, and their daughter, Caitlin.
His passing is a major loss to the nation and especially to the many immigrant families, including South Asian and Nepali American communities, who found an ally in his dedication to diversity and inclusion.
A special election will be held to fill his seat. Among those expected to run is James Walkinshaw, Connolly’s former chief of staff and current Fairfax County Supervisor.
AMN-USA honors Congressman Connolly’s legacy of service and integrity. May his memory inspire continued commitment to democracy and community empowerment.
