Virginia General Assembly Honors Pradip Dhakal for Exceptional Community Service

Herndon, VA – In a proud moment for the Nepali-American and immigrant communities, the Virginia General Assembly has formally recognized Pradip Dhakal, former Herndon Town Councilmember, for his outstanding service and leadership.
Through Joint Resolution SJ429, passed unanimously by state lawmakers, Dhakal was honored for his trailblazing role in public service and deep commitment to civic engagement. Senator Jennifer Boysko introduced the resolution co-sponsored by Delegates Irene Shin and Karen Keys-Gamarra.

Dhakal, one of the first Nepali Americans elected to office in Virginia, has consistently advocated for inclusive governance, economic development, and community collaboration. Since his election to the Herndon Town Council 2018, he has served three consecutive terms, championing major initiatives such as creating the Herndon Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in 2022.

A ceremony commemorating this historic recognition was held on May 21 at the Herndon Community Center, attended by residents, elected officials, and community leaders. Speaking after the event, Dhakal expressed deep gratitude:
"I am humbled and honored by this commendation from the Virginia General Assembly. It's not just about me—it reflects the strength, diversity, and resilience of the Nepali-American and immigrant communities I proudly serve."

The resolution also highlighted Dhakal's regional impact through his work with the Fairfax County Economic Advisory Commission, the Dulles Area Transportation Association, and the Loudoun-Fairfax Inter-Jurisdictional Committee. His leadership helped guide Herndon through challenges in housing, transportation, and economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although Dhakal narrowly lost his bid for Mayor of Herndon in the 2024 general election, his influence and dedication remain widely recognized. He deeply appreciated his wife, mother, children, extended family, and close supporters for their unwavering support, underscoring his values of family, faith, and service.

"This commendation is a call to continue showing up, serving where I'm needed, and doing more for the community I love," he said. "I remain committed to this journey—with even greater passion and purpose."
